TripAdvisor ® has come out with an American city survey revealing opinions on the best and worst of major U.S. cities.

New York City was named by the most number of respondents as the their ‘Favorite City’, followed by San Francisco in second place, and Chicago and Boston tied for third place.

Detroit was scraping the bottom of the barrel as the least favorite city, the dirtiest city and the least healthy city. Surprisingly, Los Angeles is placed just above Motown as the second-to-last least favorite place, with Atlanta third from the bottom.

Poor old Cleveland was labeled as the most boring city in the United States, and the attractions in Miami were crowned the sexiest. The survey also piles some richly deserved praise on Portland, Oregon, which topped the charts for being the most underrated city and for being the cleanest. 

In a press statement, Michele Perry, vice president of communications for TripAdvisor (www.tripadvisor.com/), said that “Portland, Oregon is a major U.S. city that doesn’t get a whole lot of publicity, but is a gem in the eyes of TripAdvisor travelers. Detroit on the other hand may be suffering a residual effect of the automotive industry collapse, as travelers ran all over Motown.”

Vegas, to no one’s surprise, gets the most overrated city tag. To be fair, Sin City also earned the coveted title of most economical city, which in these lean times, is a pretty handy title.

Sure, it’s nice to be in high-rise New York hotels right on Fifth Ave with sweeping views and the world at your doorstep. But you can spend an entire weekend of luxury living on less than $100 in Vegas.
