2008 11 Most Endangered Historic Places
The National Trust for Historic Preservation just published their 2008 List of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. The 21st annual list includes: California’s State Park System, whose budget has been repeatedly slashed and now faces $1.2 billion in deferred maintenance, Charity Hospital and adjacent neighborhood in New Orleans, and New York’s Lower East Side. ”The 21st annual list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places includes sites that reflect extraordinary periods of American history,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “These places tell remarkable stories about exploration, immigration, Civil Rights, civic pride and cultural achievement, and our nation cannot afford to lose them along with the stories they tell.”
The other places on the list include the Boyd Theatre located at Philadelphia, PA 1908 Chestnut Street Center City, Pennsylvania 19103, the Peace Bridge Neighbourhood in Buffalo, NY, The Statler Hilton Hotel in Dallas, TX, the Sumner Elementary School in Topeka, Kansas, Great Falls Portage in Montana, Hangar 1 at Moffett Field in Santa Clara County, CA, the Michigan Avenue street wall in Chicago, and Vizcaya and Bonnet House in Florida.
Neat. I’ve been planning a trip to Florida, and guess I’ll have to add Bonnet House to the list of things to do in Fort Lauderdale. For the record, the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens are located at 900 North Birch Road Fort Lauderdale FL 33304. Photo courtesy & copyrights Tony Branco/Bonnet House Inc.
The house was built by Frederic Clay Bartlett, and contains bucketloads of artsy stuff, like murals on the ceilings, balustrades with paintings, fish scultures, antique china, and turn-of-the-century carousel animals.
Bonnet House is open to visitors from 10 am to 4 pm, except on Sundays (12 to 4 pm) and Mondays (closed). Single admission for adults is $20, for children (age 6-12) $16 and seniors (above 60) $18. If you have a group of 15 or more people, you can get in for $13 per person.

The list of endangered place sites the Boyd Theater in Philadelphia, not the one in Bethlehem
Sorry. My bad. I’ve corrected it to Philadelphia. And thank you for pointing it out.
Another comment was posted a short while ago, this time by a person from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It seems I have to change it from Philadelphia to Center City. Which I have faithfully done. Apologies again, and my mistake and all that.
If someone else now wants to say that Center City is not correct, I promise you - I really, really promise you - That I will catch a flight, land up at this darn theatre and take an axe to it.
For the record, I’m not approving the second comment because I believe the person just wanted to contact me regarding the change, not actually post a comment here. Also for the record, you can contact me using the email given in the ‘About’ page.
Hey,
I was just looking to see if there were any updates since this Endangered Places list went out and found your blog.
The Bonnet House is a real gem in Ft. Lauderdale. I’ve been a couple times, and every time I go I see something new. If you are patient you can see monkeys. Explore the grounds around the house and look high into the trees. There are about a dozen little monkeys that live there. The story I’ve heard is that they belonged to a nearby bar that caught fire and the monkeys escaped to the gardens. They’ve been living there for years!
