The San Francisco based Personality Hotels Group (www.personalityhotels.com) runs seven boutique hotels, including the Diva and the Metropolis,  bunched around Union Square, and each of these hotels has its own unique signature style, ranging from sleek and trendy to romantic warmth and Zen-like coolness.

This tendency to offer something special, and different, starts right at the top - With the President & CEO of the group - Yvonne Lembi-Detert, whose training in interior decoration and sense of fashion seems to have rubbed off on her hotels. This need to make a statement, rather than just offer a room with walls and a ceiling, also seems to extend to the hotel’s sales, advertising and PR departments. The nerds have come up some strangely effective promo packages which do their best to push your buttons and force you towards a lifestyle choice, rather than just book a room.

Take, for example, the ‘Sexy or Safe Stimulus’ package. Take a look at this package deal - A good girl/bad girl whipper tickler, a booty parlor racy ribbon blind fold, ribbed condoms and Godiva dark chocolates as opposed to a $25 gas card, valet parking, a magazine subscription and a list of 25 free things to do in San Francisco, both for the same price.

Think about which one you’d prefer, and why. As far as I’m concerned, you’re on vacation, and supposed to be having fun, as opposed to saving money, in which case you should have stayed at home, rather than blow a wad on a vacation. So the whipper tickler and Godiva chocolates win.

Anyway, point is, this is the kind of thing which gives these seven hotels the ‘personality’ I’m harping about. You book in at a Hilton or a Marriott, you get boring club member points or frequent flyer miles or whatever. You book in at the Diva or the York or the Maxwell or any of the other Personality Hotels, you already made a conscious choice to have fun on the vacation. They made you choose, and they’re gonna give you the little things like cherries and chocolates and condoms which will push you beyond the edge and help you indulge yourself into a little craziness and spontaneous fun. That, after all, is what a vacation is all about.
