Miami Confidential
It’s hard work being the party capital of the world, and of late, Los Angeles has been losing it, with celebrities seeking wilder party zones and ‘hot’ scenes drifting to Miami and New York. West Hollywood still has new hotels opening every now and then, with swanky nighclubs and flashy dance floors, but somehow it all just melds into more of the same. Its like Los Angeles is the ageing superstar, while New York is the leggy fashion model and Miami is the latest teen sensation. Photo credit - Go Miami Card via Flickr
The San Francisco Chronicle has a nice take on all the things to do in Miami, with mention of the hotels, clubs and restaurants frequented by celebs, along with tips for people watching and the ‘Nice Miami dress code’.
Steamy by day and sultry by night, Miami is the hottest and hippest city on the Right Coast, a place to live large and party hearty, celebrities-gone-wild-style. Places such as the stylish Setai, the surreal Delano and such waterfront landmarks as the Mandarin Oriental and the Ritz-Carlton have enough high-brow perks to please the glitterati. And even if the city is a bit gauche, the beautiful people don’t seem to mind. Neither do the region’s other visitors, the 12 million tourists who pass through here annually, spending $17 billion on hotels, entertainment, food and other necessities. - Rosemary McClure, San Francisco Chronicle, June 6 2008
CBS4 has an article on how ‘official’ Miami is striving to become a fashion capital. A contingent from South Florida just returned from a mission to promote our area to the fashion industry. “There is a lot of interest in Milan and Italy, not just in fashion, but combining with food products and accessories, the whole creative industry that we think Miami can shine,” said Nero [Frank Nero of the Beacon Council]. And they tell us in December they will be hosting a group of Italian high end fashion designers who want to visit and see what Miami has to offer.
More evidence of Miami being ‘cool’ is provided by the presence of a PETA ‘fashion’ protest on June 9th at Miami Beach. Whenever PETA environmentalists start showing up to protest fashion accessories, you can bet your fur coats that the local scene is heating up. Photo credit & copyrights - PETA
Here’s the PETA press release - With her naked body painted like snakeskin and holding a sign that reads, “Exotic Skins Belong in the Jungle–Not on Your Feet,” PETA member Christine Perry will lead a protest against exotic-leather purveyor Aldo in Miami Beach on Monday. PETA wants shoppers to know that exotic animals killed for their skins are skinned alive, beaten to death, and killed in other cruel ways.
And if PETA doesn’t convince you, Victoria’s Secret should. The 2008 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired on CBS will be held at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel. Victoria’s Secret supermodels Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller and Miranda Kerr, among others, will strut down the catwalk in the holiday-themed lingerie runway show.
