Jetlag Explained
Pico Iyer, writing for Jet Lagged, an NYT blog, finally lives up to the blog’s name and explores jetlag. The rules for handling jet lag are not so different from the ones on the back of your medication: do not operate heavy machinery while under its influence and do not make important decisions (unless, being a C.E.O. or head of state, you have to). Expect dizziness, headaches and tiredness; do not write checks, compute taxes or make any proposals of marriage in this state. Exposure to direct sunlight can be highly beneficial.
But the money quotes are in the comments section. Jet lag is easily solved by just not sleeping for a day. If you stay awake for 36 hours you will fall asleep right on time.
Sounds simple, huh? So you’re out of sync and night is day for your body. What do you do? Don’t follow the cycle. Stay awake for one night and the next day. You can bet your boots you’ll be knocked out cold the next night, and wake up the day after fresh and jetlag free. Now the only problem is, what the heck are you going to do for 36 hours, if you don’t sleep? Solitaire? Reality television? Clean the garage? Poker? Well, at least it’s better to suffer for one night, rather than walking around for days like a zombie….
San Francisco Tiger Update: I’ll leave the hand-wringing and investigations and reports, et al to the LA Times, SFGate and the Mercury News. One question - Have any animals escaped from their enclosures before? Answer: A herd of antelope leaped a fence after being spooked by a lightning strike. And on Feb. 15, 1992, when heavy rains washed away the ground beneath a 12-foot-high fence that penned in several Sumatran tigers, including Bali, a 2-year-old, 300-pound cat. Bali crawled under the fence and wandered a few hundred yards to the park’s perimeter, where, after unsuccessful attempts to tranquilize him, park rangers fatally shot the tiger. According to reports, Bali was lunging for the park’s then-6-foot-high perimeter fence. Source - NCTimes
A herd of antelope leaping a fence in San Francisco? That would surely have hit the charts on youtube….
